Eduard Gaertner was a painter, graphic artist, commercial artist and illustrator -; in his capacity as a painter, he created landscapes, nudes and portraits, after 1945 graphic artist (ink/pen drawings) and illustrator. 1909 - 1913, he studied at the Prague Art Academy with V. Bukovac and F. Thiele, then worked as a freelance artist in Prague, Leipzig and from 1920 in Vienna. In the 1920s, numerous illustrations for the Viennese A. Wolf publishing house (E. T. A. Hoffmann, Brentano, Shakespeare), since 1925 co-owner of a commercial graphics studio (Gärtner + Kloss, G+K for short) together with Robert Kloss, and commissions for the Vienna Trade Fair, State Secretariat for Tourism, as well as companies such as Siemens, Hardtmuth Koh-I-Noor and Tungsram), briefly interrupted by a teaching position in 1929 at the Städel Institute in Frankfurt/Main, as well as illustrations for the Arbeiterzeitung and the weekly newspaper Kuckuck. Represented in the Hagenbund for the first time in 1921, a member of the Hagenbund from 1924 to 1938, and a member of the Bund österreichischer Gebrauchgraphiker (Association of Austrian Commercial Graphic Artists) between 1926 and 1938. Together with R. Kloss, he designed posters for the 50th, 51st, 54th and 55th Hagenbund exhibition. 1939 - 1944 and 1946-1949 again teaching position at the Städel Institute (applied graphics, applied fashion and scientific drawing). Almost all of his pre-war work was destroyed by bombing. 1949 - 1960 Appointment as a consultant at the Cultural Office of the City of Vienna and work as an illustrator and political cartoonist, among other things. for the newspaper Welt am Montag. 1967 Memorial exhibition by the Cultural Office of the City of Vienna. Works can be found among others: in the Albertina, in the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts Vienna (poster collection), in the Vienna Museum (pen drawings), in the Vienna Library in the Vienna City Hall (poster collection) and in the Austrian National Library. Honours, prizes (selection): Numerous prizes in applied art competitions, e.g. 1933 Austrian Tobacco Management Packaging Competition; 1936 and 1937 posters for the Austrian Federal Railways (together with R. Kloss); 1951 title; of "Professor", 1961 Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art; Honorary Grave at the Vienna Central Cemetery.
