Fritz Schirrmacher was born 1893 in Bartenstein near Königsberg in East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia). After an apprenticeship as a painter and decorator, he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule (school for arts and crafts) in Hamburg. Between 1919 and 1927 he visited the class of Julius Wohlers and Willy von Beckerath. Then he made a study trip to West Africa. Around 1930 he moved in a studio together with the sculptors Herbert Mhe, Richard Haizmann, Karl Schümann, Paul Henle and the painter Otto Thämer. Fritz Schirrmacher died in 1948 in Hamburg.   A lot of his works show common people like papergirls and craftsmen and subjects from St. Pauli in Hamburg. The oeuvre of Fritz Schirrmacher is characterized by a strict objectivity showing people in harmony and attachment with their surroundings.
