Hodinier (also Hodina) began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, but completed this in Munich with Ludwig von Löfftz and Martin von Feuerstein. Study trips took him to the Oberinntal and the Pitztal as far as Italy. During the First World War, he was wounded, but then worked as a war painter in the art group of the k. u. k. War cantonment. During his work at the front, he fell into Russian captivity, from which he returned home via Sweden and Denmark. Above all, the depictions of high mountain landscapes were popular motifs in his work. Hodinier was active in Vienna until he was recalled to Munich in 1935.
