Breiter, born in Landeshut in Lower Silesia (today Kamienna Góra, Poland), registered for the entrance examination at the Dresden Art Academy in 1944, but was drafted into the Wehrmacht. In 1946 he successfully applied to the art school in Salzburg, but never attended it. The artistic autodidact earned his living with arts and crafts orders. In 1947, Breiter received Austrian citizenship. He met the painter Agnes Muthspiel, who became his partner in work and life. He also became friends with Gottfried von Einem and the stage designer Caspar Neher. He became a student of Max Peiffer Watenphul, through which he met other like-minded artists. From this point on, Breiter's lively exhibition and travel activities began. In Italy and Greece, landscape paintings in watercolor and oil as well as extensive lithography cycles were created. Breiter lived in Salzburg until his death.
